Finding gateway to Lewis’
Camilla Goodman joins Chesham Bois Catholic Players as they venture into the mysterious world of Narnia
HAVING left war-torn London behind them, four young evacuees arrive at the mysterious house of Professor Kirk, where a wardrobe in a spare room takes them on an unexpected adventure in a magical winter wonderland.
Siblings Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy join forces with the great lion Aslan and a host of mythical creatures to do battle with the White Witch (played by Karen Hockey, pictured top left).
Chesham Bois Catholic Players was formed more than 60 years ago and now has about 100 members of all ages, both Catholic and non-Catholic, from the local area.
The group’s last appearance at The Elgiva was its award-winning production of Honk! in January, which was followed by Mort and Woman in Mind at The Little Theatre by the Park.
Members are ‘delighted’ with the adaptation of CS Lewis’ novel chosen for the production, which features a cast of nearly 30 with the youngest actor being seven.
Directors Johnny Schwerzmann and Adam Millard said: “We have both always wanted to put on a production of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and bring the magic to life on stage, and Adrian Mitchell’s script [for the Royal Shakespeare Company] gave us the opportunity. We were delighted when Lizzy Sutton [producer] asked us to direct a show and immediately thought that Narnia would be an ideal spectacular for the winter season.”
The Pevensie children are played by Kiera Lane (Lucy), Louie Cordara (Edmund), Charlotte Meeson (Susan) and her brother Jamie (Peter).
CBCP newcomer Kiera, who is 11 and attends Chalfont St Peter CofE Academy, has been performing on stage since the age of five and manages to find time to pursue her musical and sporting interests as well.
The group also welcomes Louie who is 12, lives in Hemel Hempstead and is a pupil at John Kennedy RC School. He attends Stagecoach and has recently recorded a Radio 4 play.
Charlotte is the eldest, at 15, and attends Pipers Corner School, and brother Jamie, 13, is at Berkhamsted School.
