Volunteers dig deep to plant orchard
A NEW community orchard was planted by volunteers outside a gym recently.
Danny Essex, the manager of Chesham Moor Gym and Swim, in Moor Road, Chesham, was inspired to create the orchard after seeing the Lowndes Park community orchard.
With help from Julia Brammer, one of the organisers of the Lowndes Park project, and from Chesham in Bloom and Chesham Community Orchard Group, the project got off the ground on Saturday, November 29.
A total of seven dwarf trees were purchased and planted by volunteers, which will provide fruit for the community, encourage wildlife and make the area more attractive for visitors.
Mr Essex said: “I’ve been encouraged and inspired by Chesham’s success at winning Gold in the very competitive Britain in Bloom and I feel that after the success of our community salad bed, which was stocked by Chesham in Bloom, I needed to keep pushing for the next project.
“I’d like to say a huge thank you to all the individuals and organisations who helped make the orchard possible.”
