Revamped cottage an award winner
A REVAMPED Georgian cottage has won a building design of the year award.
Number 5 Windsor End, Beaconsfield, was chosen for the Chilterns Buildings Design Award for its ‘imaginative’ restoration of the cottage.
Described as ‘courageous’ by judges, owners Sarah Boddington and Jonathan Sobczyk revamped the listed 250-year-old building, restoring its Georgian facade and updating the interior and rear.
Mr Sobczyk said: “The cottage had been derelict for almost 20 years, the back wall was falling down and important historical fittings, such as the original spit racks from the fireplace, were left disregarded and rotting. We were very keen to make it into a comfortable home while staying true to its original character and re-using as many materials as we could.”
The judges said they were particularly impressed the outbuilding at the rear had been included into the ground floor design, and that the original roof timbers had been retained in an extended loft to add another bedroom, while keeping the Georgian facade.
