Get the new year off to a healthy start
With Liz Robinson of Pinewood nurseries and farm shop
HAPPY New Year to all our readers! 2015 is going to be a fabulous one. Thankfully we had a successful Christmas – our Christmas Food orders went out with nothing more to report than a burst tub of double cream. Not even a child being unwell in the shop 20 minutes before closing on Christmas eve could unnerve us.
We have guardian angels, in the form of past weekend girls returning from university for extra hours, who swoop in to help us to pull off this fine-tuned operation.
Huge thank you to Becca, Lily and Fatima for this.
My 16-month-old, Ellie, has suffered three months of a relentless attack on her immune system since starting nursery and so it has been a huge relief to have the shop shut for two weeks over the festive period.
My husband and I have also suffered by catching the bugs from her and being kept up through sleepless nights.
We are going through our annual ritual of digging out one of our many Brita Water Filter jugs and ‘smoothie’ making machines, like we do every January, keen to detox.
There are some great seasonal detox smoothies.
I’m sure you all know the wonders of the humble beetroots.
Great for detoxing because they are packed with fibre, potassium, folic acid and antioxidants.
Their Betane helps the liver process fats.
Although extremely good for you, take heed that if they are eaten alone they can irritate your throat and make you feel nauseas.
Combining them with apple and carrot neutralises this effect.
For a delicious winter detox smoothie peel and sharply chop one small beetroot and a small carrot.
Combine this with one cored apple (I used russet – yum!), one tsp honey (I used our home produced Pinewood honey) and ¾ of a cup of water. It is absolutely delicious.
Or why not combine a cup of fresh baby spinach, ¼ of cucumber, a peeled carrot, half and apple and a quarter of a cup of water – again packed full of nutrients and antioxidants.
I added a tablespoon of lemon juice to jazz it up.
All these ingredients are available at Pinewood Farm shop open seven days a week.
By the time you’ve read this I’m sure the water filter and smoothie machine will have already been cast back to the depths of the cupboards until next year!
