Keeps you up to date with the Jazz scene in Bucks

Buckinghamshire Advertiser - - ONSHOW - Tonyy White

THE new year brings two very attractive dates for local jazz fans, the first at Berkhamsted on January 10, followed by another on the 13 at Marlow.

Berkhamsted Jazz has Leighton Buzzard-based Arnie Somogyi, with his Greensand Jazz Band. If you have not come across the band before, its line-up should be enough to persuade you to attend the gig at the Civic Centre. Joining bassist Arnie are Allison

Neale on alto sax and flute, on trombone will be Adrian Fry, a founder member of The Bone Supremacy, brilliant pianist Mike Gorman and Clark Tracey on drums.

Just a few days later the spotlight switches to the Royal British Legion at Marlow, where former Art Blakey Jazz Messenger Jean Toussaint is the star turn on tenor sax, backed by the resident Frank Toms Trio.

If dinner jazz is your thing, then Va Pensiero at Beaconsfield has Bruce Adams, Richard Busiakiewicz and, yes, Arnie Somogyi, on Monday January 5.

Looking further ahead in 2015, Marlow Jazz Club features American tenor saxophonist Harry Allen on March 10 and US guitarist Howard Alden, along with Karen Sharp, on Wednesday April 22.

Amersham Jazz Club at Beaconsfield SYCOB FC, continue their weekly sessions, featuring very much New Orleans-style music.

I have learned that Merlin’s Cave, Chalfont St Giles, is to be closed for refurbishment, so there will be no Sunday lunchtime jazz sessions until work is completed.

Peter Hughes said: “It looks like it will be closed for a good month or more. We will keep you in touch.”
