OUR 18-month-old, El­lie, is in­sist­ing on tak­ing nu­mer­ous trips into our frozen gar­den and I have to say it is look­ing ex­tremely odd. Be­sides my win­ter flow­er­ing helle­bores I have some very con­fused sprout­ing bulbs and there is even spring blos­som on a few of my shrubs. So I thought it best I stick to food this month.

We will be hav­ing our home­reared Dex­ter beef in our shop late Fe­bru­ary. This small, rare breed has a great fol­low­ing and our cows are very con­tent, hav­ing en­joyed a grass fed diet and a mild win­ter.

My friends of­ten ask how I can bear to send off th­ese de­light­ful it­tle cows who graze next to my gar­den.

I agree it is a shame as they are so beau­ti­ful and gen­tle, but regular read­ers of my col­umn will know hat I love beef. Es­pe­cially a roast!
