Ingram tipped for top

PHENOMENAL: Wycombe Wanderers's goalkeeper Matt Ingram MATT Ingram has been linked with moves to the Premier League in the past – and one Wycombe Wanderers star cannot wait to see him earn a shot at the big time,

Defender Aaron Pierre has formed part of the League Two’s meanest back-fives playing in front of the talented goalkeeper and player of the month runner-up for January.

Manager Gareth Ainsworth admits there were worrying moments during the winter transfer window as he wondered whether the top-flight clubs would come calling.

However, he remained a Wanderer come deadline day earlier this month and the 21-year-old will continue his education between the sticks at Adams Park.

Pierre, during his time at Brentford as a youngster, saw Simon Moore sold to the Premier League when Cardiff City raided Griffin Park for the shot-stopper in 2013 at the age of 23.

Moore, though, found himself in the considerable shadow of club captain and number one David Marshall after he arrived in the Welsh capital and went on loan to Bristol City last term.

He is yet to make an appearance in the top-flight and only made his league debut for the Bluebirds in January as he kept a clean sheet in the Championship win over Fulham.

The way Ingram is playing for the Blues this season, solid centre-half Pierre reckons he could well play at the top level before his ex-Bees colleague.

Pierre said: “He’s a massive part of what we do. If you change a lot of players in a team then you lose the flow.

“When it is a fixed team and everyone knows how to play with each other then you become more solid.

“I can’t wait to see him in the Prem in a few years. He’s the best young keeper I’ve worked with and that’s down to him. You’ll see him in the mornings doing his gym programme.

“He’s a nice lad, very humble and takes things step by step. That’s the sign of a true professional.

“Simon Moore is another great talent, but Matty is much younger. Both are good.

“Matty is powerful and he even knocked me out against Morecambe! He’s good on the ground and in the air. He’s phenomenal.”

Ingram was pipped to the League Two monthly gong by Tranmere’s Rory Donnelly on Friday last week.
