Chit your potatoes ready for planting
ground level leaving the beds and borders all neat and tidy. The old foliage needs to be removed to allow the new, often green, foliage to reach the light and flourish over the year to come.
I must admit that here I cheat; I love ornamental grasses and am exceptionally pleased that over the past few years they have made somewhat of a comeback – however it can be hard work with shears especially when the growth is all so close and stiff.
As so often happens in my garden I reach for my trusty hedge trimmer and cut the growth down in one swift swipe before scooping up the remains and putting them in the green bin to be recycled.
February can seem like the boring month before everything kicks off in spring while the tulips and daffodils signal the start of the year to come, however there is much to be done and in a nice way February gives us time to stop and catch our breath after a busy Christmas and new year and look forward to the delights that will come as the results of our labour in September.
