Chit your pota­toes ready for plant­ing

ground level leav­ing the beds and bor­ders all neat and tidy. The old fo­liage needs to be re­moved to al­low the new, of­ten green, fo­liage to reach the light and flour­ish over the year to come.

I must ad­mit that here I cheat; I love or­na­men­tal grasses and am ex­cep­tion­ally pleased that over the past few years they have made some­what of a come­back – how­ever it can be hard work with shears es­pe­cially when the growth is all so close and stiff.

As so of­ten hap­pens in my gar­den I reach for my trusty hedge trim­mer and cut the growth down in one swift swipe be­fore scoop­ing up the re­mains and putting them in the green bin to be re­cy­cled.

Fe­bru­ary can seem like the bor­ing month be­fore ev­ery­thing kicks off in spring while the tulips and daf­fodils sig­nal the start of the year to come, how­ever there is much to be done and in a nice way Fe­bru­ary gives us time to stop and catch our breath af­ter a busy Christ­mas and new year and look for­ward to the de­lights that will come as the re­sults of our labour in Septem­ber.
