Schools race to sign for fun run
Challenge raises funds for Africa
SCHOOLS are being called on to enter teams for a fun run’s second year.
School Aid, in Wapseys Lane, Hedgerley, is holding the run in July to raise funds for the charity. The charity raises funds to send packages to schools in Africa, containing books, stationery and equipment.
About £20 pays to fill a primary classroom shelf full of books, £50 to supply textbooks for a class, or £150 to train a library assistant.
Now School Aid is appealing to schools to sign up teams to race against each other.
Gayhurst School, Bull Lane, Gerrards Cross, has already signed up.
The school regularly collects books, stationery, and sports equipment to be sent to schools in Africa via the charity.
PE teacher Simon Kearns co-ordinates the donations and has entered a team of boys in the 5km run taking place at the Bulstrode Park, Gerrards Cross on Sunday, July 5.
The run is a circular route passing The Bull Hotel and through Hedgerley Green.
There will also be a shorter 2km early years run, or walk, for families and younger children.
The runs were inspired by the fact the children the charity helps walk miles every day to get to school.
Jane Perry, a volunteer at School Aid, said: “We are extremely grateful to Gayhurst School for all their hard work and enthusiasm. Many of us have unwanted good quality books and pencils which would otherwise be thrown away and by donating these to School Aid we are helping the advancement of education in Africa. We are looking for other schools who would like to take part in the School Run in July.”
There will be prizes on the day, for most sponsorship money raised, first race competitor, first family group in The School Run 5km, first family group early years 2km, best fancy dress and best funny hat. People can enter individually (£8), as a team (£6 per person) or as a family (£15).
