CALL TO REVERSE A&E CLOSURES
The debate over A&E services in Bucks has raged for years, with A&E services closing at Wycombe and patients facing longer journey times to places like Stoke Mandeville and Wexham Park. Campaigners are hoping the next election will give a public voice to
AChgaoAlpvMeasnPtiAoseIsGuNppEoR rt to re-instate an A&E department by calling for a health referendum.
Ozma Hafiz has written an open letter to the chief executive of Wycombe District Council to use the polling stations for May’s general election to have a referendum on health services.
She hopes to get an A&E department back at Wycombe Hospital. Patients currently travel to Stoke Mandeville Hospital for emergency care.
Miss Hafiz, 33, said: “A referendum on health would give the serviceusing public a chance to voice their views on the changes to our hospital and put to bed the myth that the public have been consulted.”
Miss Hafiz, who has been campaigning for seven years on the issue, said: “We are always told that the public were consulted on the A&E closure. This would be a way for everyone to get a say on what they think about what has happened.”
The campaigner thinks that an A&E department is really needed in High Wycombe and people in the town are ‘suffering’ without one. She wants the whole community to get behind the campaign and for it to remain apolitical.
She said: “It is important that the whole community is reunited on this issue.
“There is no manual to campaign on an issue and I am trying everything I can, there is no wrong or right way of campaigning.”
In a letter that Miss Hafiz sent to the Prime Minister, she said: “Since the downgrades at Wycombe Hospital, which began in 2005, many people have suffered. Neighbouring hospitals Stoke Mandeville and Wexham Park have been overwhelmed, with both having been in ‘special measures’ in the past year.”
Miss Hafiz has a petition to re-instate A&E at Wycombe Hospital. There are 4,000 signatures and she hopes to go to Downing Street with it once there are 5,000.
