Public needed to help Wendy win top award
‘Staff member has been heart of the gym for 26 years’
A GYM’S hard-working staff member is calling on readers to help her win a prestigious award.
Sports coordinator and lead at Chesham Leisure Centre Wendy Zakrzewski has been shortlisted for this year’s UK Active Spirit of Flame Awards 2015.
The national award recognises those who have dedicated their lives to getting more people more active, more often.
Ms Zakrzewski said: “I’m very lucky to have made the final 12, but now I need the public’s help to get me to the shortlist of four nominees.”
Throughout her 26 years at the gym, she has worked in a variety of roles, including lifeguard, swimming instructor and gymnastics coach. In 2008 she became the sports coordinator and lead for the junior sports programme.
She has since started a swim programme for disadvantaged children to prepare them for their first school swimming lessons.
For more than 10 years, Ms Zakrzewski has been supporting local disabled groups in partnership with Action for Children, to offer inclusive holiday activities for disabled children, and has developed ‘splash and tumble’ sensory sessions for children with special needs. She also runs athletics, badminton, tai chi, gymnastics, parkour and fencing courses at the gym.
As well as her role at the centre, she also finds time to work with Chesham Swimming Club and the Berkshire County Swimming Development Squad as a volunteer coach.
She also supports local drama and dance companies as a chaperone during pantomime season and volunteers at Heritage House School.
General manager at Chesham Leisure Centre Darryl Dewar said: “Wendy’s been the heart of Chesham Leisure Centre for 26 years.”
