Village car park could go up a level
Discussions over Station Road offer an opportunity for free parking
FREE parking could be a possibility for villagers if a much-used car park were to become a multi-storey.
Gerrards Cross Parish Council chairman Chris Brown says that potential plans to add extra storeys to the car park in Station Road would be an ideal opportunity to give villagers an hour’s free parking to bring it in line with the arrangement in neighbouring villages such as Chalfont St Peter and St Giles.
No plans are yet in place for such an arrangement, but Mr Brown says that if a plan were to be agreed between South Bucks District Council, which runs the car park, and the Gerrards Cross Traders’ Association, he would like to see it used as an opportunity to allow people the chance to park for free.
He said: “Having a multistorey car park there is something that has been discussed for a long time and there are good points and bad points to it.
“If it were to happen, I really think that it should give people the chance to park for free for half an hour to an hour.
“It would be a real opportunity to do that, and to bring into place the arrangement they have in Chalfont St Peter.
“I also think that people working in Gerrards Cross who need to use that car park should be subsidised as well.”
Use of the Station Road car park has increased since Waitrose supermarket opened opposite it in 2012, which has led to discussions about adding extra storeys to it to accommodate the extra traffic.
Mr Brown said: “It’s gone from being not used all that much to being at capacity a lot of the time, so an extension would make sense in a lot of ways.”
He added: “The other option to improve parking in Gerrards Cross would be to increase the capacity at the train station car park, because that is always full as well, and there is demand for it.
“It might even make more sense to do that than to increase the Station Road one.”
