Le­gion to stage VE Day me­mo­rial events

TWO spe­cial events are planned to mark the 70th an­niver­sary of VE Day on Fri­day next week.

The Chal­font St Peter and Chal­font St Giles branch of the Royal Bri­tish Le­gion have planned a two minute si­lence at 3pm around the War Me­mo­rial in the grounds Peter’s church.

In the evening, in con­junc­tion with the Parish Coun­cil and other towns and cities around the UK, a bea­con light­ing cer­e­mony will take place at 9.30pm on Gold­hill Com­mon, Chal­font St Peter.



This will be pre­ceded by a read­ing of a Spe­cial Trib­ute by a lo­cal Sec­ond World War vet­eran.

Keith Bowler, branch chair­man of the Royal Bri­tish Le­gion, said: “It is im­por­tant we re­mem­ber and give thanks to those in the Armed Ser­vices whose ser­vice and sac­ri­fice en­able us peace and en­joy to­day.

“May 8 also al­lows us to re­mem­ber the groups of peo­ple work­ing to keep us safe on the home front and those in the mer­chant ship­ping ser­vice who kept us fed and sup­plied.” to en­joy the free­dom we
