Legion to stage VE Day memorial events
TWO special events are planned to mark the 70th anniversary of VE Day on Friday next week.
The Chalfont St Peter and Chalfont St Giles branch of the Royal British Legion have planned a two minute silence at 3pm around the War Memorial in the grounds Peter’s church.
In the evening, in conjunction with the Parish Council and other towns and cities around the UK, a beacon lighting ceremony will take place at 9.30pm on Goldhill Common, Chalfont St Peter.
This will be preceded by a reading of a Special Tribute by a local Second World War veteran.
Keith Bowler, branch chairman of the Royal British Legion, said: “It is important we remember and give thanks to those in the Armed Services whose service and sacrifice enable us peace and enjoy today.
“May 8 also allows us to remember the groups of people working to keep us safe on the home front and those in the merchant shipping service who kept us fed and supplied.” to enjoy the freedom we
