First-past-the-post is not democratic

Buckinghamshire Advertiser - - OPINION -

NO one can deny that Cheryl Gillan has won her place in parliament: she received more than half of the votes in the election.

The government as a whole, however, received more than half of the seats in Parliament with just 37 per cent of the votes.

The new makeup of Chesham Town Council is also a cause for concern.

The Conservatives received fewer than half of the votes cast, but won three-quarters of the seats. This is not good for democracy.

Even those who do not want proportional representation for parliament must wonder whether we can continue with our first-past-thepost system for local government.
