Calls for return of red phone boxes
Idea for icon on High Street gets cheers
PEOPLE could soon be taking selfies next to a classic red phone box in a high street thanks to a cafe owner’s suggestion.
Owner of Brazil’s Cafe in Market Square, Chesham, Gello Ilczuk, asked Chesham Town Council at its annual town meeting last week if there was any chance the normal BT phone boxes in the high street could be replaced with red phone boxes.
He said: “If I was walking along and saw a red phone box I’d stop and take a picture and send it to my friends and I would remember Chesham.
“Now, I just walk past them because they’re just phone boxes. Is there any way we could change them to old school red phone boxes?”
His question was met with loud cheers and applause from the packed out council chamber.
Town clerk Bill Richards responded saying: “The short answer is I’m afraid I have no idea! If you’re asking if it could be a community project then we’d need to know much it’d cost and the maintenance cost. We could bring it forward to the town council at a future date.”
Mayor Peter Hudson is keen to see the idea become a reality during his year in office.
He said: “I think it’s a great idea! The whole premise of replacing them with something iconic would be fantastic. I’m very supportive of the idea and I’ll be making enquiries to try and find one.
“The Chiltern Chamber has said it is keen to help, so I’ll definitely take them up on that!
“Some people have expressed concern about the windows being broken and it being used as a toilet, but you run that risk and if you didn’t you’d never do anything if you took that approach.
“I definitely think it’s something that could happen, I don’t think there’s a reason it would not, it’s now about finding a way to make it happen.”
