A stunning sevengame winning run fired United into the top three going into the final day of the season, for the first time since August. But a 3-1 defeat at Morecambe on the last day allowed Bury and Wycombe to leapfrog them and leave the Shrimpers to face Stevenage.
Southend held their nerve to knock out Stevenage with a 4-2 aggregate scoreline in their semi-final, although they needed extra time in a dramatic second leg at Roots Hall.
