Wy­combe looked set for au­to­matic pro­mo­tion hav­ing been in the top three since the eighth game of the sea­son. But three de­feats in their last 10 games, in­clud­ing a cru­cial one to More­cambe, saw them tum­ble out de­spite a dra­matic fi­nal-day 3-2 win at Northamp­ton.

Wy­combe beat Ply­mouth 5-3 on ag­gre­gate to book their place at Wem­b­ley with a com­fort­able pas­sage through the semi-fi­nal stage. 5th

Southend have lost their last three play­off semi-fi­nals - in­clud­ing be­ing beaten by Bur­ton last sea­son. They also suf­fered de­feat to Crewe in 2012 and were beaten by Don­caster in the Sky Bet League One play­offs in 2008.

A stunning se­v­engame win­ning run fired United into the top three go­ing into the fi­nal day of the sea­son, for the first time since Au­gust. But a 3-1 de­feat at More­cambe on the last day al­lowed Bury and Wy­combe to leapfrog them and leave the Shrimpers to face Steve­nage.

Southend held their nerve to knock out Steve­nage with a 4-2 ag­gre­gate score­line in their semi-fi­nal, although they needed ex­tra time in a dra­matic sec­ond leg at Roots Hall.
