ENJOY a Green Letter Day experience with your local Wildlife Trust.

The Chilterns Group of volunteers with the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust is running Green Letter Day events on Saturday, June 13, when visitors to College Lake nature reserve will have an extraspecial experience in this magnificent place for wildlife.

There are three Green Letter Day experiences on offer, with topics that will attract knowledgeable botanists and enthusiastic beginners. Groups are kept small (no more than eight people), so that you will always have your questions answered by the local experts.

Wild Life Pot-pourri is ideal for people who enjoy all things that nature has to offer. Over 1,000 different wildlife species have been recorded at College Lake. The Green Letter etter Day experiencence gives visitors a chance to see just some of these species with expert guide Steve Keene. This walk will be a great opportunityunity to learn moree about the many different habitats, and find out from Steve about the wild flowers, birds and butterflies that have made this important nature reserve their home.

One of these habitats is an arable field brimming with cornfield flowers. College Lake hosts a very special project to restore cornfield flowers to the Chilterns landscape, and miid-June is the perfect time to witness the gloriously colourful spectacle at its best.

The Arable Weeds project is hugely successful with the revival of many cornfield flowers from yesteryear including pheasant’s eye, corn cleavers, field cow wheat, and corn cockles.

George Bray, who has spent many years working on this project, will lead the guided walk around the field.

Naturally there are hundreds of waterloving birds at College Lake, and identifying a shelduck from a little ringed plover and a redshank isn’t always easy. Meet avian expert Liz Ruckell, whose extensive knowledge of the reserve will ensure that no bird will escape undetected!

Sturdy footwear and suitable clothes are recommended, and if possible bring binoculars and a camera to make the most of your Green Letter Day. There will be refreshments on arrival, and the Visitor Centre café will be open through the day.
