Pedal power hope for carbon footprint
Village’s family ride to highlight climate change
THE phrase ‘On yer bike’ usually holds negative connotations, but there is a group of people who are hoping to change those words for good.
Change4Chalfont is a community-led initiative group based in Chalfont St Peter that are hoping to both reduce the village’s carbon footprint and its impact on the environment.
They have organised a family bike ride for next Sunday, June 7, which starts at 2pm from the Bike Barn, Market Place, and goes along country roads before heading back about 5pm.
A quick stop over at the Chiltern Open Air Museum is planned during the ride for people to have a drink and a snack.
The ‘Bike Doctor’, otherwise known as Roland Collicott, a pharmaceuticalconsultant from the village, will be one of the leaders of the ride and is keen for people to take part.
He said: “We’re all about increasing environmental awareness.
“We’re trying to reduce people’s environmental impact so we’re a local group doing things locally, sort of chipping away.
“We encourage people to ride their bikes and show them actually it’s quite a possibility to ride around Chalfont St Peter.”
He added: “We’re just going to have a very short ride with the emphasis being on a family ride.”
According to Mr Collicott the public can feel a little overwhelmed when it comes to climate change.
He said: “I think people have an increased awareness but people still feel that nothing they can do makes a difference and our feeling is that if we all chip away we can make a difference.”
He added: “I’m a scientist and I can see that climate change is for real and it’s something that we need to do something about.”
Mr Collicott is “optimistic” about the bike ride, at which anyone unaccompanied over 14 is welcome to attend, but added that if people wish to go to send him an email beforehand.
