Crowdfunding boost for cycling tour stage
County council asks business and residents for help
WITH less than a month to go, the county council is using innovative ways to ensure a national sporting event can return to Bucks.
Stage five of the Aviva Women’s Cycling Tour 2015 comes through the county on Sunday, June 21 and the county council is hoping to plug a funding gap by crowdfunding the remainder.
Much of the 64-mile final route, which starts in Marlow, goes through the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty before it finishes in Hemel Hempstead.
Cyclists will race through scenic Bucks villages such as Chesham, Great Missenden and Great Kingshill.
Crowdfunding is usually carried out via the internet and is a method of raising
CHAIN REACTION: The Aviva women’s cycle tour will go through Bucks in June funds for a particular venture from a large number of people.
Numerous businesses and projects in Bucks have used it to help fund their own campaigns, such as the Chiltern Open Air Museum, in Chalfont St Giles, which has been raising money to rebuild the famous music studio, Jackson Studios.
The council has had the support of a number of partners to help host the tour, but it needs public support to ensure the event is not lost in the future.
Clive Parker, head of civic and ceremonial services, said: “For Bucks to remain on the Aviva Women’s Tour Map, we need more funding to guarantee that this international sporting event comes back to visit us next time round. We have created a crowdfunding opportunity with some great cycling-related prizes.”
Prizes include access to an exclusive area at the start line, a cycling analyst test at The Marlow Club, Marlow, and VIP hospitality and behind the scenes access.
There will also be the chance to lead the peloton out at the start of the stage.
An online auction hosted closer to the event includes prizes such as a team jersey, a two-day cycle maintenance course from ATG training, a seat in the front car of the race, the opportunity to wave the start flag and the chance to be on the stage as the teams officially sign in.
