Soaring to success with new venture
Pilot sets up flight training from her front room
YOU might think the lounge of a home in Gerrards Cross would be an unlikely place to learn the skills needed to fly a plane.
But you would be wrong.
Because pilot Linda Wheeler is flying high since launching her new business Linda Wheeler Ground School – and she says it is possible to learn all you need, and pass the nine theory examinations required for a private pilot’s licence, (PPL) in just one week in her home.
In fact, since launching the company just a few months ago, she already has a 100 per cent success rate from students who have studied with her.
A self-confessed frustrated commercial pilot, Linda was unable to gain her Class One pilot’s licence because she is ‘as blind as a bat without my contact lenses’.
Instead she earned her PPL, followed by her instrument rating (IMC) and set up a small business chartering private jets for business and leisure clients. She went on to work as Operations Manager at The Pilot Centre in Denham.
But she says launching the Linda Wheeler Ground School has fulfilled a long-held ambition and given her a new lease of life.
She said: “Ground school doesn’t have to be a grind.
“My ethos is: simplify, don’t mystify.
“I’m not trying to impress my students with my own daring exploits, my job is to make sure they know all of the information they need in order to be a safe, qualified pilot.
“I can get them ready for those tough exams – and make the experience as enjoyable as possible.
“I am delighted with the way it is going so far. It is the realisation of a dream for me.”
Mrs Wheeler currently runs group and individual courses from her home in Gerrards Cross and is also planning some teaching in the sun with courses held in Spain.
“It is absolutely possible to get people through the training and the nine exams in five days,” she said. “And my students have a 100 per cent pass rate to prove it.”
