Hearty Zip­pers win

CHAL­FONT St Giles Bowls Club helped raise al­most £200 for char­ity through their an­nual game against the Zip­pers – fea­tur­ing all play­ers who have un­der­gone open-heart surgery – on Satur­day af­ter­noon.

There were good wins on both sides, but Chal­font emerged as over­all win­ners 98-79, with their top rink Maggy Read, Pa­trick John­son and Nor­man Clare (26-8).

This was fol­lowed on Sun­day by a Three Coun­ties game against Wexham, in which Chal­font won three of the five rinks – in­clud­ing a top ef­fort from John Pink, Liz Baldwin, Roger Dar­bourne and Rob Kirby – but lost 96-86 over­all.

Ear­lier in the week, As­ton Clin­ton were ham­mered 121-81 af­ter Chal­font won on five of the six triples. It was a closer cal­cu­la­tion to find the top rink, with more than one win­ning by 16 shots, but the award go­ing to Flora Alder­ton, Bernard Bai­ley and John An­der­son (24-8) af­ter count­ing back to ends won.

Chal­font’s men went one bet­ter against Cip­pen­ham in the Bucks Plate, win­ning on all rinks for an over­all 84-55 victory to come away with the max­i­mum 14 points, with top rink honours go­ing to Rob Kirby, Tony Batkins and Mike Alder­ton.

But the ladies lost to both Burn­ham in the Trindell and Amer­sham in the Burn­ham Plate, and a mixed friendly against Princes Ris­bor­ough also ended in a 94-73 de­feat, de­spite a top rink from Mau­reen Bur­bridge, Bernard Bai­ley and Al­lan Rum­ble.
