Hun­dreds en­joy Chal­font St Peter an­nual event

AN AN­NUAL parish day fin­ished with an ‘emo­tional’ re­cep­tion on Satur­day as a priest cel­e­brated 25 years in a vil­lage.

The Chal­font St Peter Parish Day, which took place on Austen wood Com­mon from noon un­til 4pm, saw about 700 peo­ple at­tend through­out the day, fol­lowed by a spe­cial mass and re­cep­tion for Fa­ther Martin McDon­ald at St Joseph’s church which started at 5.30pm.

Christine Hop­son, chair of the events team at the church, said: “It was ab­so­lutely fan­tas­tic. We were very blessed with the weather. It was very, very sunny and warm.

“I would have said there was prob­a­bly 700 through­out the course of the day.

She added: “I know be­cause we did 400 sausages and burg­ers and the whole thing went.” Speak­ing about the mass af­ter­wards Mrs Hop­son said:

“It was a very emo­tional day for Fa­ther Martin.

“He spoke about how much he has en­joyed his time here at Chal­font St Peter parish.”

She added: “He said it’s been a very en­joy­able and re­ward­ing time he’s spent here in the parish and he has made some very good friends.”

Chil­dren and adults en­joyed en­ter­tain­ment such as drama group Through The Wardrobe and lo­cal mu­si­cian Jon Ken­dell and a parish raf­fle.

Mrs Hop­son said the day “Will have raised sev­eral thou­sand”, with the money go­ing to­wards church re­fur­bish­ments.

She added: “It was a very en­joy­able day, from the small­est ba­bies to the youngest parish­ioners.

“There was some­thing for every­body.”
