MP committee to pay visit to site

Buckinghamshire Advertiser - - NEWS -

A GROUP of MPs who have the power to recommend changes to the HS2 line are on their way to Bucks.

The HS2 select committee, made up of MPs from different parties, will be visiting Wendover and Aylesbury today (Thursday, June 11).

The group will look at areas which are particularly badly affected by HS2 and will be meeting people from the different communities to hear their views on how the impact of the line could be mitigated.

It is the first time the group has visited Bucks since the general election took place and comes ahead of petitioning sessions at which individuals and groups can talk to the committee about how their homes and surroundings will be impacted. HS2 Action Alliance director Hilary Wharf said: “It’s a chance for the group to see first hand one of the worst affected areas.

“The visits have proved extremely useful so far and the group has been very interested to see the different communities and how the line will impact them.”

The Chilterns Countryside group has encouraged people to go along to the visit to show the strength of feeling on the issue of HS2 and to demonstrate the importance of protecting the Chilterns Area of Natural Beauty.

A campaign for a long underground tunnel, to go directly underneath the area in order to minimise impact was announced earlier this year and this is one of the things which will be discussed on the day.

Among the sites set to be visited on the tour will be St Mary’s Church in Wendover and Aylesbury Park Golf Club, as well as views of different scenes in the area.

The group is expected to visit the Chiltern District later this year, with visits to areas including Chalfont St Giles, Amersham and Chesham, but no date has yet been set for this.

The Colne Valley region, including parts of Denham, were visited by the group in January.
