THOUSANDS of children have enjoyed a church’s Sunday School over its 200-year history.

Broadway Baptist Church, in The Broadway, Chesham, celebrated the milestone anniversary of the Sunday School during its morning service on Sunday.

Deacon at Broadway Baptist Church Peter Holt said: “Two hundred years is an incredible length of time and has been a great contribution to the youth and children of Chesham.”

Broadway Baptist Church began to meet in the locality a little over 300 years ago, borne initially out of a joint congregation of people from Chesham, Berkhamsted and Tring.

The general Baptist chapel, not the current building, was built in 1712. The church’s long history of caring for children was also evident in the building of a school room with funds raised for the construction of a new chapel in 1897, which was completed in 1902, due to the church responding to the pressing needs of Chesham’s children and families.

The family environment is still a focus of the church today with it offering ga a Chipmunks toddlers’ group oup on Thursdays, Boys’ and Girls’ Brigades on Fridays days and Youth Alpha, a youthuth group for children 11-plus,lus, also on Fridays, amongong other non-weekly events, nts, and the Sunday School ool called Sunday Morningng Kids Church – SM:KC.

Mr Holt added: “In n the long term it’s hard to tell what the future will hold for our service to the youth and children of Chesham.

“It’s an area that we continue to invest in as a church.

“In the shorter term we know that we’ll continue to run events for the children of Chesham. Our dedicated Sunday school helpers will continue to provide a safe and fun place to learn more about Jesus and the Christian faith.

“This is why on Sunday, Broadway Baptist Church was the home of a small celebration service for the children’s work that has happe happened in the pa past, is happening in the present and undoubte undoubtedly will continue for future generatio generations.”
