MP invites minister to visit and survey scene
THE transport secretary has been invited to the Chilterns so that he can see the damage set to be caused by HS2.
Cheryl Gillan, MP for Chesham and Amersham, spoke out last week to ask transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin to visit the area so he could see why she feels that a tunnel under the Area of Natural Beauty is so necessary.
During a transport questions session in Parliament last Thursday, Mrs Gillan mentioned that the HS2 select committee will be visiting the area on Monday to see the area campaigners are eager to protect.
She then invited Mr McLoughlin “to look at the AONB and to see why the tunnelling is essential to keep our manifesto pledges to build new infrastructure in an environmentally sensitive way and to maintain national protections for AONBs”.
Mr McLoughlin said that although he has visited the Chilterns on numerous occasions, he hoped that he would be able to fit a future visit to the area into his diary.
