Cross bragging rights

Buckinghamshire Advertiser - - SPORT -

DOUBLE bragging rights were achieved by Gerrards Cross Bowls Club this week when they knocked Bucks neighbours Chesham out of the National Top Club competition and National Two Fours.

Not only that, but the National Top Club KO was achieved by way of a 5-0 clean sweep, with Chesham conceding the game during the triples, with Duncan Gauld, David Simpson and Kirk Smith in an unassailable position.

Neil Farnish and John McGuinness already had the two wood and four wood singles in the bag and Alan Price and Antony Parrott had confirmed victory in the pairs, while Michael Gomme, Simon Cobb, David Ross and Richard Reid had triumphed in the fours.

In the National Two Fours, McGuinness’ rink, which included Farnish, Simpson and Smith, won convincingly, as did Price with Ross, Reid and Tom McGuinness, with the overall score 50-12 to the Cross.

The ladies’ team of Angela Davies, Maureen Merry, Margaret Poole and Mary Smith also had an emphatic win against Amersham in the Burnham Plate, but they also had just the one winning rink – that of Sue Dwyer, Joyce Leeson and Joyce Ludford – in a friendly defeat to Marlow. Finally, five triples took part in the club’s own captain versus vice-captain’s match, with victory going to the stand-in vice-captain Bob Leeson, who also skippered the highest rink with Janice Russell and Hugh Russell.
