Old man river

Buckinghamshire Advertiser - - PEOPLE AND PLACES -

This week all eyes have been on the Thames as the 800th anniversary of the sealing of the Magna Carta was celebrated with a flotilla from Hurley in Berkshire, through Buckinghamshire, to Runnymede in Surrey. On Monday Queen Elizabeth II, Prince William and Prime Minister David Cameron were among those commemorating the anniversary. So we searched our archives to find these amazing photographs of the nation’s favourite river.

For thousands of years the River Thames has been a focus of human activity. Pictured above from left two women enjoying Henley Regatta in 1914; racing on the Thames in 1949, Alfred Hitchcock floats away; Santa takes an unintentional dive and a magician demonstrates how to float. Below Daleks threaten the Houses of Parliament and an amphibious Triumph Herald at Marlow.
