Democracy needs contested seats

Buckinghamshire Advertiser - - OPINION -

I WOULD like, if I may, to comment on recent letters to your editor regarding party politics and Chalfont St Peter’s parish council.

It seems to me that the election of Karen Dickson as an independent councillor proves people who have no party affiliation can be elected to our parish council.

Many of your readers may not know that eight parish councillors were elected unopposed in last month’s elections.

The critics of the parish council’s current composition have the solution in their own hands. Follow Karen Dickson’s example and stand for the parish council at the next election ensuring, in the process, there are no uncontested wards.

Local democracy will be all the better for it.

JONATHAN RUSH Chiltern District Councillor Chalfont St Peter Central Ward
