Young critic scoops top prize

WIN­NING RE­VIEW: Is­abella Ri­vas, eight, pic­tured with au­thor Gareth P.Jones, won a na­tional book re­view com­pe­ti­tion A YEAR THREE young­ster has beaten over 1,000 other chil­dren to win a na­tional book re­view com­pe­ti­tion.

Eight-year-old Is­abella Ri­vas, from Chal­font St Peter CofE Academy, was the year three to four win­ner in the South East Re­gion in the Read For My School ini­tia­tive.

Or­gan­ised by the Book Trust, over 7000 book re­views were taken into con­sid­er­a­tion across the whole of Eng­land.

Her re­view was based on the book ‘Daisy and the Trou­ble With Life’ by Kes Gray.

Is­abella and her fam­ily en­joyed an award cer­e­mony at Crest­wood Col­lege, Hamp­shire, where she was pre­sented with eight books, a cer­tifi­cate and a £25 theatre to­ken.

The event was at­tended by au­thor Gareth P. Jones who talked about his books and his writ­ing ca­reer.

Is­abella said: “Gareth was very funny be­cause he sang songs, told sto­ries and was wear­ing a funny out­fit. He was dressed as a pi­rate be­cause his new book se­ries is called Steam­punk Pi­rates. I got his au­to­graph in both of his books.”

Brenda Meek, the school’s lit­er­acy co­or­di­na­tor, said: “We were all de­lighted to hear that Is­abella was a prize win­ner.”
