Top show from Cross
IT WAS closer than the score suggests – but Gerrards Cross Bowls Club overcame Banbury Borough 4-1 in the National Top Club competition this week.
John McGuinness got them off to a good start by winning the two woods singles, and while the scores were levelled in the four woods singles, the fours were always comfortable in their match and soon closed out to put the Cross back in front.
The pairs and the triples were much tighter, but Tom McGuinness, David Simpson and Kirk Smith held on to their last end lead to put the Cross in an unassailable position, before George Reid and Alan Price closed out the pairs for good measure.
In the EBA competitions, Smith and John McGuinness won through to the singles quarter-finals, while father and son duo John and Tom McGuinness have a place in the county pairs quarters, as do Reid and Michael Gomme.
There are last places in the last eight too for the triples of Smith, David Ross and Richard Reid, and Gomme, Tom McGuinness and George Reid, and for the four of Ross, Simpson, Richard Reid and Wayne Richardson.
Meanwhile, the club maintained their 100 per cent record in the Chiltern & Thames League with a 6-4 win over Loudwater, their winning rink including Maureen Merry, Kevin Dwyer and Ray Merry.
