Youth club calls for help after structural repair bill
£100,000 raised for extension had to be spent on the roof
A YOUTH club is in desperate need of funds after having to divert money raised for a new extension to fix structural problems.
Chalfont St Giles Youth Club, in Narcot Lane, spent two years raising more than £100,00 for an extension but this year discovered water had been leaking under the roof.
An insurance claim was rejected as the damage was deemed ongoing and not a ‘peril’, despite the youth club saying no evidence of leakage was visible inside the building and regular maintenance had been carried out.
Youth leader and trustee Ebony Jefferson, 23, the youngest member of the management committee the club has ever had, said: “For two years we worked tirelessly to raise funds, taking part in community events to support our village and other communities, as well as helping raise the profile of the club. I know our club has a lot to offer – the right amount of love and determination to help others is there but people just need to give us a chance.”
Youth leader Suizan Jefferson said: “Unfortunately, we are now in desperate need of a further £20,000-£30,000, most of which is needed to fix problems in the original structure. We had raised this money but, earlier this year, we had a disaster when it was discovered that water had been seeping in under the roof and this had to be fixed immediately, other- wise the club would have been forced to close – and may never have reopened.”
