Spin bowlers wreak havoc
Cove 146 all out Gerrards Cross 102 all out Cove won by 44 runs
GERRARDS Cross suffered a humiliating 44-run defeat to Cove on Saturday in a match dominated by the turning ball.
Cove made a good start, reaching 79-2 before Cross’ triple-spin attack set to work. Joe Bracey (2-40), Elliot Green (2-40) and Izzy Khan (4-14) made the most of a spin-friendly wicket to reduce Cove to 91-5, and 130-9, before they were bowled out in the 51st over for 146. Openers Sam Westaway (27) and James Crosthwaite (37) were untroubled by, and the Cross were in the box seat with the score at 65-1.
But the dismissal of Crosthwaite sparked an horrendous collapse, and while excessive bounce contributed to a couple of dismissals, many of the batsmen were unable to deal with the huge amount of turn and the runs almost dried up.
The Cross capitulated to 86-9, losing eight wickets for 21 runs in 18 overs, and while a last-wicket stand of 16 between Khan and Bracey secured a batting point, it only delayed the inevitable.
