Holmer Green IIs 151-9 Challoners 154-8 Challoners won by two wickets CHALLONERS clutched victory from the jaws of defeat in the penultimate over at Holmer Green seconds on Saturday.

Wth Challoners’ final pair at the wicket and Holmer on the brink of only their second win of the season, veteran Heinz Richardson surprised everyone by hitting Darrell Ward, who had been causing Challoners all sorts of problems, for four, followed by six, to snatch the win.

Earlier in the day, Challoners had won the toss and elected to bowl, but it was Holmer who started the better with a strong partnership between Darrell Ward (28) and Adam Mash (45). When Hasnain Ahmed had Ward caught at mid-off, two quick wickets followed for Richardson (2-26) and Holmer were under pressure at 55-3.

Mash continued to strike the ball well but was losing partners rapidly and once he lost his wicket, at 113-6, Holmer were scrapping for runs. But the tail wagged and youngsters Freddy McAndrew and John Day frustrated the fielders with adventurous batting, seeing their side to a modest 151-9.

Challoners were a wicket down in the first over when Luke Rickett caught Lawrence Chamberlain down leg side but Chris Price and Saqib Ali consolidated the innings and took the total past 50 before Price was run out for 33.

Steve Wood joined Ali and they took Challoners to just shy of three figures before Ali (26) lost his wicket and when Wood went for 22, they were still looking comfortable at 120-4. But the bowling of Ward (4-25) was starting to cause some problems, and two quick wickets suddenly turned the game on its head.

Sam Robinson (24) battled hard but when he lost his wicket Challoners were suddenly down to their final pair and still 11 runs short. After a few scratchy byes, it was time for Richardson to take control and score his vital 10 runs.

Also in Division One, Hawridge & Cholesbury kept their promotion hopes alive with an impressive 84-run win over second-placed Wendover.
