Ladies celebrate 50th an­niver­sary with win

Land­mark for club co­in­cided with Bucks tri­umph

THERE was a spe­cial cel­e­bra­tion at Che­sham Bowls Club on Mon­day as the ladies sec­tion marked the 50th an­niver­sary of their for­ma­tion.

With ladies oc­ca­sion­ally be­ing given per­mis­sion to play on the green, at the club’s AGM in March 1965, a propo­si­tion that a ladies sec­tion be formed was car­ried by an al­most unan­i­mous 42 votes to two.

The an­nual sub­scrip­tion was set at two guineas, and the ini­tial con­di­tions were that ladies could oc­cupy three rinks be­tween 2pm and 5.45pm on week­days, but af­ter 6pm they could only use the end rinks, pro­vided none of the men were wait­ing for a game.

For two ladies, the cel­e­bra­tions proved to be a mem­o­rable day. Chris Atkins, still bowl­ing at Che­sham, re­mem­bers bowl­ing on the green on the first day that ladies were al­lowed, while Au­drey Baker played in the very first ladies match, against Mer­ton & Mor­den.

Baker, who trav­elled up from Dorset to join in on Mon­day, went on to win the first of Che­sham’s county ti­tles, skip­ping the fours in 1969, which she fol­lowed with the county pairs ti­tle the fol­low-

Wins for Court­ney Har­vey, of the Lon­don and South­ern friendlies against a com­bined Char­lene Turpie and Sue Springell, Coun­ties BA. Peter Hor­ton, Brian Weald­stone and Lup­ton team by 17 shots in the triples, and for Wright and Roger El­lis­ton beat 137-103, and Iver Heath, 51-47.
