Ladies celebrate 50th anniversary with win
Landmark for club coincided with Bucks triumph
THERE was a special celebration at Chesham Bowls Club on Monday as the ladies section marked the 50th anniversary of their formation.
With ladies occasionally being given permission to play on the green, at the club’s AGM in March 1965, a proposition that a ladies section be formed was carried by an almost unanimous 42 votes to two.
The annual subscription was set at two guineas, and the initial conditions were that ladies could occupy three rinks between 2pm and 5.45pm on weekdays, but after 6pm they could only use the end rinks, provided none of the men were waiting for a game.
For two ladies, the celebrations proved to be a memorable day. Chris Atkins, still bowling at Chesham, remembers bowling on the green on the first day that ladies were allowed, while Audrey Baker played in the very first ladies match, against Merton & Morden.
Baker, who travelled up from Dorset to join in on Monday, went on to win the first of Chesham’s county titles, skipping the fours in 1969, which she followed with the county pairs title the follow-

Wins for Courtney Harvey, of the London and Southern friendlies against a combined Charlene Turpie and Sue Springell, Counties BA. Peter Horton, Brian Wealdstone and Lupton team by 17 shots in the triples, and for Wright and Roger Elliston beat 137-103, and Iver Heath, 51-47.
