Fulfilling a vow in memory of Dad
Step-daughter waited three years to skydive
A TEENAGER realised a long-held dream when she leapt out of a plane for a hospice in memory of her step-dad.
Megan Hart, 16, from Mount Nugent, Chesham, had always wanted to skydive for the Hospice of St Francis, ever since it cared for her stepfather Dave Hart, who died there in February 2013, aged 42, after a short battle with cancer.
Megan was 13 at the time, three years younger than the minimum age required for the daring tandem jump, but as soon as she turned 16 in February, she signed up for the challenge and four months later, she was taking to the skies.
Megan said: “When Dad was in the inpatient
HEROES: Team Hart: Ella Muddiman, Ben Woodbridge, Megan and Craig Swann unit at the hospice, he saw a leaflet about the skydive and said how much he would have loved to have done it himself.
MEMORY: Megan pictured with her stepdad when she was 13 young, I decided to do an abseil instead, which raised £8,500, but I vowed there and then that as soon as I was old enough, I’d do a skydive for Dad and I’m so pleased I did.”
The brave Ashlyns School pupil jumped from 13,000 feet with her cousins Ella Muddiman, 17, and Ben Woodbridge, 21, from West View, Chesham and one of Ben’s university friends, Craig Swann, 21.
In a touching gesture, and because Megan did not have any secure pockets of her own, Ella jumped with a photo of Dave, who was a retained firefighter at Chesham firestation, in her jeans pocket so that, effectively, he was jumping with them.
Megan said: “It was so great to have Dad with us and the most amazing thing I’ve ever done.”
So far, Team Hart has raised £1,820, smashing Megan’s initial £1,000 target through Just Giving and since Dave died, the team has done various sponsored events for the hospice, including the abseil, three Dave the Rave discos and the hospice’s Midnight Walk, raising nearly £12,000.
