Sea Cadet closure a sad loss for town

Buckinghamshire Advertiser - - OPINION -

WHAT a sad day for Chesham as the Sea Cadets close their doors this week after 72 years.

What people do not realise is that the sea cadets are not financed by the Ministry of Defence but are self supporting, thus having a big strain on staff and committees.

The Chiltern unit’s HQ was given by Bucks County Council in the late 1960s at a peppercorn rent.

The unit has produced many good people in its 70 years. But alas no more peppercorn rent.

Ex-cadets have gone on to serve in every campaign from the Second World War to Afghanistan.

Is this another important facility lost to youth in Chesham?
