Grab a blanket for town picnic
IF you go down to the park this weekend you are sure of a big surprise.
The final preparations are underway for the Friends of Lowndes Park’s Lowndesbourne Town Picnic, which takes place in Lowndes Park, Chesham, on Sunday (Sep 6) from 1pm to 4.30pm.
The event will combine a free classical concert in the park’s Performance Area with a community picnic for the whole town.
Classical musicians and singers, led by Chesham’s town crier and opera singer Jane Dodd, will perform well known pieces, while the owner of Ahead Tuition, Umar Aslam, will keep the little ones entertained by running free activities for children.
The idea for the picnic is to combine the success of the two previous Lowndesbourne concerts with an idea first mooted on the OurChesham Facebook page by chairman of the Friends of Lowndes Park, Michael Rowan, about organising a town picnic, which was well received by members.
The Friends hope that Cheshamites from all communities will bring their sarnies, spread out and enjoy the music as they chat to family and friends old and new.
One of the organisers Kate Hutchinson said: “It’s an ideal way to have a community event that is for the whole town. All you have to do is bring a picnic, enjoy a free concert of well-known music and songs and it’s great way to spend time with your loved ones. And, as always in Chesham, you are bound to bump into people you know!”
For those who might like a little something in addition to their picnic, there will be a beer tent run by Anna and Zoe Roll in aid Breakthrough Breast Cancer, tea and cake provided by The Elgiva Cafe as well as an ice cream van.
Chesham’s guerilla knitters have also been busy preparing for the event and have created some new additions (pictured), which will be on show at the event.
The event has been sponsored by the Friends of Lowndes Park, Chesham’s mayor Peter Hudson, Chesham Action Partnership, Waitrose and other donors.
Mr Rowan added: “The support for this project from local people has been overwhelming and the Friends look forward to welcoming the entire town. Please do pack up your hamper and come along and join in the fun because it won’t be a town picnic without you!”
