Defeated Challoners saved by bonus points
MID BUCKS CRICKET LEAGUE DIVISION ONE Prestwood 209-5 Challoners 118-8
Challoners lost by 91 runs
CHALLONERS’ league season came to a close on Saturday with a derby defeat to Prestwood, but gained the batting and bowling bonus points to narrowly avoid relegation.
Having won the toss and asked Prestwood to bat, after that it was all downhill. Prestwood made a good start, despite Chris Glennie (35) being caught off the bowling of Ellis Wilson (1-29), playing his first ever game for Challoners, with the score on 69.
That brought Prestwood’s Mr Dependable Craig Eden to the crease, and he and Warren Davis put on a further 52 runs before Davies was bowled by Kevin Wilson for a fine 62.
Prestwood’s middle order, well guided by Eden, continued to make life difficult for Challoners’ bowlers, despite bowler of the year Darren Charlton’s (2-64) best efforts, that saw them through to 209-5 off 40 overs, with Eden 68 not out.
Challoners’ reply started painfully slowly, with the Prestwood bowlers Eden and John Humphrey well on top. A double strike in the eleventh over by Humphrey (2-8) saw opener Chris Price out, followed next ball by Hasan Sayed for a golden duck with the score on just 15.
Humphrey failed with the hattrick ball, but Challoners continued to struggle, and Wilson fell next with any batting points still a long way off.
Charlton, Saqib Ali and Howard Chamberlain then perished before veterans Simon Wood (16) and Heinz Richardson (37no) dragged Challoners beyond the 100 mark.
At the end, they were 118-8, but with other results going their way, they at least secured another year in Division One.
Challoners finished seventh and Prestwood fourth, one place ahead of Hawridge & Cholesbury, who beat Lacey Green by 19 runs.
