Chance of a lifetime
Find out more about hospice trek
PEOPLE can help a hospice by embarking on an adventure of a lifetime.
The Hospice of St Francis is holding an open evening on Tuesday for anyone interested in finding out more about its planned Trek to Peru, leaving in September 2016. The evening, which starts at 7pm at the Hospice in Spring Garden Lane, Berkhamsted, will showcase the Trek’s itinerary and give a brief overview of the hospice and expected fundraising commitment for participation in the exciting adventure.
Led by experienced guides, the 10-day Trek will follow the mystical Inca trail in Peru, following the famous Salkantay Trail and taking in snowcapped mountains, lush jungles and ancient sites along the way, culminating at the ancient city of Machu Picchu.
The adventure will also involve a two day community project helping to improve conditions at a local community centre.
Mums-of-two and friends for 36 years, Jacqui Wieksza and Sam Allum (pictured) have already signed up for the once-ina-lifetime trip.
Ms Wieksza said: “We decided a year ago that we wanted to do it. Now that our children, who are all in the mid-late teens don’t need us so much, it’s time to do something for ourselves. We’re so excited. We can do all the fundraising together, support each other on the trip, take on what we know will be a fantastic challenge and give something back to an amazing charity which changes lives and which cared for my mother-inlaw, Margaret Wieksza, who spent the last week of her life there before she died, aged 86, in May 2013.”
The pair are already planning a host of fundraising events and initiatives in a bid to raise £8,000 for the hospice, including running a half marathon, holding a casino night, a Valentine’s ball and a tombola stall at a fete, bag packing in Marks & Spencer’s, as well as coffee mornings and car boot sales.

The open evening is free to attend and there is no commitment to sign-up on the night for the Trek, although there is an early bird registration fee of £340 until September 30.
