Pair go head to head

Buckinghamshire Advertiser - - SPORT -

FINALS night at Richings Park Bowls Club on Saturday must have seemed like a personal battle between Claud Stimpson and Bob Doddington.

They met in the final of both the men’s championship and men’s 101, Stimpson getting the upper hand in both by winning the former 21-19 and the latter 101-89.

The pair faced off again in the men’s championship Pairs, where Stimpson teamed up with David Orr and Doddinton with Bob Matthews, and Doddington finally got on top with a 25-14 win.

Doddington also won the men’s two woods, where he saw off Matthews 21-11, while in the drawn pairs final, Athena Cawley and Diane Bond edged past Jean Matthews and Jackie Andrews 17-15, which went down to the last end.

Meanwhile, Denise Newport was just as dominant of the ladies as Stimpson was of the men, beating Matthews 21-16 in the ladies championship and Cawley 21-13 in the ladies two woods.

Two days previously, Richings had crashed out of the Ad Fin semi-finals to Iver Heath, having got off to a bad start and been 15 shots down after five ends, but ended up being only three shots down at the end of the match.

This was mainly due to Bob Matthews’ triple, when they were 12 shots down , coming back to win by four shots (23-19). However, the other triple lost 16-9 and Richings were out.
