Queen’s Award presented to nurse for a lifetime of community care
AFTER providing high quality community care for 30 years, a dedicated nurse has been awarded a prestigious honour.
Helen Mehra, lead nurse for integrated elderly and community care at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, has been awarded the status of Queen’s Nurse, by the Queen’s Nursing Institute, in recognition of her commitment to high standards of practice and patient care.
Having spent most of her district nursing career in the Chilterns area, Helen has become a familiar face in GP practices and the community.
Although she has spent the last three years in a leadership role, Helen still sees patients who are supported by the Amersham Adult Community Healthcare Team (ACHT).
Along with three other colleagues, Helen has also recently achieved a postgraduate qualification in healthcare
DEDICATED CAREER: Helen Mehra has received the Queen's Nurse award. leadership from the Mary Seacole national NHS leadership academy, which champions compassionate patient care.
Helen has had a variety of roles in her long career, including a spell as a community midwife, district nurse and matron of a community hospital.
She has also spent many years in India, where she was a volunteer midwife teaching safe delivery techniques to midwives working in the Himalayas, as well as the manager of a large community outreach project.
Helen and her husband, Raju, still have a home in the central Himalayas and, only this year, provided aid to communities affected by a devastating earthquake.
She said: “It’s great to be recognised for doing a job I thoroughly enjoy and am passionate about.
“I love working in the community and I also enjoy supporting my team, sharing my knowledge and experience with them and watching them develop their skills and gain in confidence.”
Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust Chief Nurse Carolyn Morrice, said: “I’m so pleased Helen has been recognised for her hard work and dedication.
“She’s a key leader in our community team and an inspiration to all who work with her.”
