Dad tests his mettle with final iron man challenge
Fundraiser ready for sixth and final epic triathlon in Mallorca
A FATHER is coming to the end of his gruelling six triathlon challenge which he set himself to raise cash for a children’s charity.
Chesham born Pat Barrett has so far completed five out of six of the challenges and has raise more than £800 for Children with Cancer UK.
The father-of-two completed the Mad March Triathlon in Dorset in March, the Ocean Lake Triathlon in Kent in April, the Salty Sea Dog Challenge in Boscombe in May, the Redricks Lake Triathlon in July and the Marlow Half Ironman in July.
On September 26, Mr Barrett will compete in Ironman Mallorca, which will see him swim 2.4miles, the equivalent of about 160 lengths, cycle 112 miles and run 26 miles.
Mr Barrett is funding all the travel and event fees himself so that all the money raised goes direct to the charity.
Mr Barrett said: “I just wanted a new challenge, I’ve never really been into swimming, so that was the main reason really. It’s been tough, but it has gone well so far. I didn’t swim much before this, when I started about 10 months ago I’d swim four lengths and need to stop, but in Mallorca I’ll be doing the equivalent of 160 lengths. It’s okay once you start getting into it.”
Mr Barrett said he is looking forward to his final challenge.
He said: “I’m looking forward to it being over but I’m also looking forward to doing it, I’ve done enough training now so I just hope it isn’t too hot and they’re having a heatwave. I have a couple of days there afterwards when I plan to be chilling.”
Mr Barrett, who raised £1,300 for the Wycombe based charity Skidz last October by completing the Spartan Beast in memory of a close friend who passed away in 2013, is hoping to raise at least £1,000 for Children with Cancer UK.
He added: “I’m just very lucky to have two healthy children, a lot of people are not that lucky. I’ve had lots of support from people but most of them think I’m mad.”
