HS2 must engage with a community it plans to cut a swathe through

Buckinghamshire Advertiser - - OPINION -

THE leaders of South Bucks and Chiltern district councils are angry, as are their counterparts in Aylesbury Vale and Wycombe district council and the leader of Buckinghamshire County Council. Quite frankly, who can blame them. HS2 Ltd has planned a series of six community engagement events to be held before Christmas.

Four of these events are to be held in and around Birmingham. Two have been planned to take place around the Euston area. That leaves a big round zero for Bucks. You would think that when you want to cut a swathe right through the centre of the Chilterns, the very very least you would do is speak to the people who live there and let them know what’s going on. But apparently not. This high speed rail link is meant to be about connecting people – at least that’s what the marketing spin says. It would appear, though, it isn’t necessarily about connecting with people.

The leaders of the five councils in the county have fired off a letter to the chief executive of HS2 demanding to know why the county’s communities are being ignored.

It will be interesting to see what, if any, response they get.
