A CAFE which has served commuters for 16 years has closed forever.

Lori's Cafe, which is based on the platform at Beaconsfield Station, has opted to close following disagreements with Chiltern Railways, which runs the station.

Its last day of trading was Friday, October 2.

The cafe was faced with closure last year when Chiltern Railways refurbished Beaconsfield Station, and a petition, backed by Downton Abbey star Joanne Froggatt, was launched to save it.

However, since then, owner Lori Briggs says she has been placed in an increasingly difficult position by Chiltern Railways, never knowing how long she would be allowed to remain in place.

Mrs Briggs, who runs the cafe with Dave Dalton, said: “It's become untenable. We are just operating month by month, never knowing if we will be asked to move, and it's not a situation which can continue. We've become tired of it, we don't want to deal with it any more.”

She added: “It's a real shame because I have loved working here and serving the customers over the years. I will miss it a lot. I've had a really good relationship with people here, and I'll be very sad to go, but Chiltern Railways hasn't left me with any choice.”

Customers who use the cafe were also disappointed at the news.

Rob Shaw, who commutes to London every day from the station, said: “It's a local institution. So many people use it. It's a real shame that it won't be here any more.”

A Chiltern Railways spokesman said it would be looking to find a replacement in order to keep cafe facilities at the station.

Jennifer Payne, services director at Chiltern Railways, said: “At the end of last year, we provided notice to the coffee shop to vacate for redevelopment purposes.

“However, the cafe at the station has taken the decision to close before their lease has expired.

“We are working on finding a temporary solution to replace the cafe to minimise any inconvenience to our customers.

“Once the improvements to the station have been made, we will be undertaking a tender process for the new facilities which will offer customers both an improved cafe area and enhanced waiting room facilities.”
