DON’T BE SHY, SHARE YOUR HEIRLOOMS WITH JOHN BLY
A WELL-KNOWN antiques expert will help raise cash for a hospice by hosting a special event next week.
The BBC’s Antiques Road Show expert John Bly is coming to Berkhamsted to host a special valuation evening at the Hospice of St Francis’ award-winning furniture and upcycling showroom Returned to Glory.
The resident furniture expert, from Tring, will be back at the Northbridge Road emporium on Wednesday casting his trained eye over anything punters bring him from small furniture items, silver, metal ware, bronze and glassware to porcelain, ceramics, enamels, ivory and toys.
At last year’s inaugural event, an 1830s tea caddy bought 30-years-ago for £120 was valued at £1,250 to £1,500, while a pair of late 19th century Edwardian enamel opera glasses were estimated at £80 to £90.
Manager of the store Francesca Alden said: “If you’ve ever wondered if you’re sitting on any valuable treasures at home, maybe hidden away in the loft or tucked away at the back of a cupboard, now’s the time to dig them out!
“It’s open to all and people are invited to bring a maximum of two items per person, each to be valued by John on the night in return for a £5 donation to the hospice for each one.”
In June the showroom, which opened in September 2012, scooped the Specialist Shop of the Year award at the national Charity Retail Association Awards, beating off stiff competition from a total of 380 charities across the UK which took part.
Last year it won Berkhamsted and District Chamber of Commerce’s Berkhamsted Business of the Year Award, to recognise its contribution to the community.
Refreshments, including wine, will be served at the event, which will run from 5.30pm to 8.30pm.
