Young Harriers soar in cross country relay championship
CHILTERN Harriers’ young athletes had more autumn success at the South of England Cross Country Relay Championships at Wormwood Scrubs on Saturday.
Highlights for the club were gold medals for the U13 boys, silver medals for the U20 women and fastest lap accolades for Angus Williams in the U13 boys’ race and Will Perkin in the U17 men’s.
The U13 boys carried on the momentum of their Chiltern League victory with a convincing relay win. Thomas Job led from the off and brought the team home in the lead with a time of 7.14, and Alex Aldred extended the lead with 7.27 on the second leg before Angus Williams achieved the fastest lap of the race (7.09) to bring the team home by a margin of 26 seconds. The U13 girls came 14th thanks to the efforts of Olivia Cameron (8.17), Orla Williams (8.11) and Millie Hughes (8.54).
Robyn Watkins led out the U15 girls with a good run of 7.37, while Soraya Lockwood (8.10) and Emily Alderson (8.14) continued the good work to clinch 11th, while in the U15 boys’ race, Tommy Davies (7.13), Cameron Reid (7.06) and Ben Howell (7.50) combined to be 17th.
Hannah Morton (9.02), Amy Harris (9.57), and Emma Barraclough (9.34) were a clear second in the U20 women’s, while an under the weather Emily Bannister’s 9.17 set up Scarlett Wager-Leigh (8.43) and Hannah Thear (8.38) to come home fifth in the U17 women’s.
Perkin came home leading the field with an excellent time of 10.17 on the tougher 3k route in the U17 men’s race, which proved to be fastest of the day, while Richard Slade ran 11.28 and Sam Howell 11.20 to leave them sixth.
There were also some good runs on the day from the B and C teams.
