Sepede: Battling cup exit can spur Penn on

Buckinghamshire Advertiser - - SPORT -

MANAGER Giovanni Sepede wants his Penn & Tylers Green side to use Tuesday night’s narrow cup exit to Chalfont St Peter to build on a fine start to the season.

Penn took a Chalfont side who play two levels above them in the Southern League to penalties in the Wycombe Senior Cup before bowing out 4-3 on spot kicks, Danny Jordan having cancelled out Anthony Thomas’ opener for Chalfont in normal time.

Jordan also netted twice in a 6-0 win at Woodley United on Saturday, in which Casey Bocarro, Adam Harman, Callum Coull and George Weller also netted – putting Penn just a point behind Hellenic Division One East leaders Finchampstead with two games in hand.

Sepede said: “I know (Chalfont boss) Danny Edwards well and had a chat with him after the game in which he was very complimentary of us. They are flying two levels above us but had to work hard for their win.

“I actually thought we were the better team in the second half and looked the more likely winners, but anything can happen with penalties, and I came away feeling really positive. They were respectful to us and we were graceful in defeat.

“It’s been a good start in the league, and the Chalfont game should give us the confidence now to build on that. It was also good to see the goals shared around against Woodley, with everyone chipping in now.”

The cup game came just seven months after Penn caused a shock by knocking Chalfont out of the same competition 4-1 in the semifinals last season. Sepede added: “I think Danny was a bit mindful of that and didn’t want to take us lightly!”

Chalfont Wasps had no game this week, but Flackwell Heath stayed top of the Premier Division after beating Tuffley Rovers 4-3 on Saturday and Ascot United 2-0 on Tuesday night
