Wycombe get season under way with poor defeat
WYCOMBE Squash & Racketball Club finally got their season up and running this week – but it was not the best of starts.
Junior Freddie Evans won the opening rubber against Gerrards Cross’ Rory Fisher 3-1, but it did not stop WSRC getting first day blues as they went down 15-8.
Wins for Stewart Hefferman and Michael Burnett turned the tide in Cross’s favour with 3-0 and 3-1 wins respectively before Stuart Burnett gave WRSC hope with a 3-1 win against Steve Wright.
It left the visitors just a point down going into the final rubber, but Mike Hally was beaten 3-1 by Cross’s Andy Peers, giving the hosts victory, plus the four bonus points for the win.
Victory means Cross have started the season with three wins and they sit just two points behind Division One leaders and reigning champions Aylesbury Grammar who look to be hitting their stride once again, their latest success being an emphatic 19-5 win over Beaconsfield Lions.
Last year’s Division 2 Champions Wycombe 2s (aka Nomads) lost on their travels to the RAF.
The match actually ended 10-10 in terms of games, but with the RAF having taken three rubbers to two, they gained the four bonus points for a 14-10 win overall.
Behind them Holmer Green 2s are the nearest pursuers after defeating Chesham Bois Mavericks 15-8.
Meanwhile, Wycombe Ladies 2s opened their campaign in Ladies’ Division 2 with a game of two halves against a combined Windsor and Farnham Common team. Fleur Drumer and Helen Cardy won 3-0 and 3-1 against Farnham Common’s Lucy Varco and Alison Burge, but Brenda Ede and Jan Bailey lost to their Windsor counterparts by the same score, leaving the match a 9-9 tie.
