MORE than £1,000 was raised for a nursery school in the Gambia on Saturday (October 31).

The Gerrards Cross Methodist church hall held their annual Christmas Craft Fair, where a range of festive items were sold.

For more than 20 years Christine and John Billingham have been supported by friends and members of the church in organising the event.

The money has gone to build a nursery school in the village of Kunkujang and latterly to pay the salaries of the five teachers and headmaster.

Just over 200 children between the ages of three and six years of age go to the school in a country which has no state education for those under seven. Mr Billingham said: “The benefits of this early learning cannot be overemphasised. Other supporters, seeing the school was a success, provided a bole hole so that clean water was available.

“Another man buys the exercise books and other classroom materials for the whole year and stocks the first aid cupboard.”

Organisers stress however funds are always needed to help educate the kids.
