Santa’s sleigh is back on the fundraising run
The Rotary club will once again be making the rounds in Chesham
Father Christmas will visit hundreds of children in dozens of streets in Chesham next month, thanks to The Rotary Club of Chesham once again organising the Chesham Christmas Float.
Various groups from the town will collect money for good causes while assisting Santa and his sleigh.
The Chesham Annual Christmas Float Appeal suspended the popular annual float, which had been running for more than 40 years, in 2013 for safety reasons.
The Rotary Club of Chesham did not want to see the float cancelled again so it took over the running of it and re-built the float, which made its debut last year.
Due to it being the first year the club organised the float, members said they may have been a little ‘optimistic’ about the length of the routes and together with poor weather, it meant Father Christmas was not able to visit everywhere he was hoping to.
Rotarian Peter Squire said: “Being our first year organising the route we may sometimes have been a little optimistic with their length and if this together with poor weather delayed the sleigh last year so that a route could not be complete before our deadline of 9pm we’re sorry and we’ll try harder this year.
“We’ll work to improve on what we believe was a great success last year and hopefully it’ll run for another 40 years.”
Last year, fraudsters posed as volunteers from The Rotary Club of Chesham and attempted to collect money by telling people that the Chesham Christmas Float will be along shortly.
To combat this happening again, identity cards will be issues to all collectors dated for a single day and police have been notified of the route schedule, which will also be printed in the Examiner and online at www. getbucks.co.uk.
Mr Squire added: “Unfortunately it’s possible that weather will interrupt, delay or even cancel collections, so please be alert to the possibility of scammers.”
Santa will start his tour of the streets on Wednesday, December 2 and he will be out almost every evening after until Thursday, December 17.
The sleigh will also make appearances in the town centre and other places during December.
However, the float’s debut this year will be at Christmas in Chesham on Friday, November 27 when Father Christmas heads to his grotto, also organised by the Rotary Club of Chesham, for one night only at Costa Coffee in High Street from 6.30pm.
There will be a Designers’ and Makers’ fair on Saturday, December 5 from 9am until 6pm at St Michael and All Angels Church, Sycamore Road as part of the attractions of the Amersham Christmas Showcase. The fair will be helping to celebrate Small Business Saturday by promoting the self employed artisans from the area. The 25 artisans will display paintings, sculptures, weaving, leatherwork, contemporary photography, ceramics, textile pictures, bags and laser cutwork.
In the run up to the fair, the Amersham Artisans have teamed up with Harris and Hoole, who will be hosting two or three of the artists each Wednesday between 10am and 2pm. The artists will be demonstrating their craft and will have some items for sale.
Full details about the artisans, along with examples of their work, can be found on the Amersham Artisans’ Facebook page www. facebook.com/ amershamartisans.
The artisans will have an event on Saturday, November 14 at Rowan Garden Centre, Gorelands Road in Chalfont St Peter between 10am and 4pm.
